Trainer Peter Gelagotis is hoping it will be a case of third time lucky for Hvasstan in this weekend’s 2013 South Australian Derby.
Hvasstan has already lined up for both the Group 1 Victoria Derby and the Group 1 Australian Derby last run, finishing fourth and sixth respectively.
The three-year-old will need to find career best form if he is any hope of winning the 2013 South Australian Derby.
“I’m pleased with him and that’s why we are chancing our arm, but I’m also mindful that he needs to lift,” Gelagotis said.
“The horse’s performances in Sydney were way below his best Melbourne form and there’s a question mark.
“The way the acceptances have fallen, he’s not going to get a better chance (to win a Group One).”
Gelagotis believes that Hvasstan has the ability to bring a Group 1 home at one stage in his career.
“I’m very fond of this horse and have been very confident with him, and I am still,” the trainer said.
“But you’ve also got to be mindful that he’s travelled to Sydney and come back and he’s got to go to Adelaide.
“He’s meeting horses on the up that have probably had specific preparations for that race and it’s probably been a bit of an afterthought for us.”
Hvasstan has won four of his 12 race starts and has earned more than $427,000 in prize money during his horse racing career.
