May 2nd, 2014

Having strolled home to win the Listed VC St Leger (2800m) last time out, Order Of The Sun has opened as and maintained favouritism in betting markets for success in the 2014 SA Derby; currently featuring at a quote of $4, ahead of Bring Something ($4.80), Scratchy Bottom ($7) and Gamblin’ Guru ($9).

Will Order Of The Sun justify favouritism and win the 2014 South Australian Derby, or will one of his talented rivals find the line in the clear?

Scratchy Bottom ($7)

Securing two wins and a place from only six competitive appearances to date, Scratchy Bottom represents excellent value to punters for success in the 2014 South Australian Derby at $7 odds, or $2.75 for a place. Winner of the Robert Hunter Fillies Maiden (1400m) first-up on February 1st, the Sebring filly produced a strong turn of foot to overcome poor running position and finish fourth in the Group 1 The Vanity (1400m) on February 15th before again sprinting well to finish fifth in the well-contested Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m). Impressive when claiming third in the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) last time out, Scratchy Bottom will leave from the ideal barrier 1 in the 2014 SA Derby and will be partnered by leading local jockey Dom Tourneur.

Gamblin’ Guru ($9)

Arguably hitting career best form over his current preparation, Gamblin’ Guru perhaps offered the best value for money for success in the 2014 SA Derby at generous $9 odds. Unlucky to fall during the running of the Listed CS Hayes Memorial Cup (1600m) on March 10th, the New Approach gelding responded in the best way possible; finishing second in the Adelaide Galvanising Maiden (1600m) before securing back-to-back victories in the Listed Adelaide Guineas (1800m) and Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (2000m) most recently. While allocated the wide and awkward barrier 19, regular jockey Jason Holder has been confirmed to retain the ride of Gamblin’ Guru this weekend and is an excellent chance of success this weekend.

Surge Ahead ($26)

While unable to handle the heavy going of the soaked Randwick track and finishing a disappointing seventeenth in the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) last time out, Surge Ahead is a known performer of firm tracks and is a great chance to figure in contention in the dying stages of the SA Derby this weekend. Claiming three wins and a place from only nine starts so far, Surge Ahead was unlucky when blocked for a run and sixth in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) on March 1st and will leave from the central barrier 10 this weekend.
