Kiwi trainer Andrew Campbell has underlined talented filly Delicacy as the one to beat in Saturday’s featured Group 1 SA Derby (2500m) at Morphettville, but his confident Werther is more than capable of a competitive performance in the feature race.
Werther has posted a commendable race record of three wins and a further four minors through his ten career starts so far and enters the 2015 SA Derby off the back of an impressive performance for success in the Group 2 Championship Stakes (2100m) at Ellerslie on April 18th.
Thrilled with the condition of his runner, Campbell told The Advertiser he did not realise the class Delicacy brings to the 2015 SA Derby field prior to witnessing her success in last weekend’s Group 1 Australasian Oaks, but is confident Werther will be suited to the conditions of the race.
“We didn’t think the wet track at Ellerslie (Championship Stakes) would suit him but he seemed to get through it OK,” Campbell said.
“He beat a reasonably good field that day.
“We had two races in mind – the Queensland Derby or Adelaide. He’s been up a while so we thought we’d try a hit-and-run mission to Adelaide.
“It’s good money but we didn’t realise that filly Delicacy was going to be so good.
“She looks like she’s next to a good thing. The way she won on Saturday, she’s going to take a hell of a lot of beating.
“But anyway, we’re here to have a good.”
Undoubtedly the current stable start of boutique trainer Campbell, Werther stamped his claims as one to watch over a maiden two start preparation in the early stages of 2014, but failed to make an impact in two black type starts upon returning in spring.
Breaking through for a maiden race win in the Aranui Harvesters Maiden (1400m) first-up this time, the Lord Tavistock gelding failed to beat a single runner home in the Lindsay Mile (1600m) on February 28th but responded in the best way possible in taking out a Waipukurau minor over a mile; progressing to second in the Group 3 Manawatu Classic (2000m) in his only other start prior to the Championship Stakes.
