2016 South Australian Derby Field and Barrier Draw

May 11th, 2016

A talented and capacity field of sixteen plus one emergency has been confirmed for Saturday’s featured 2016 Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) at Morphettville Racecourse; highlighted by the inclusion of some of the Adelaide Autumn Carnival’s standout three-year-olds.

Mick Kent saddled Abbey Marie to success in the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) last weekend, and is offered a live chance of repeating the feat this weekend after confirming Charlevoix in the 2016 South Australian Derby field.

Debuting for success in the Grand Hotel Frankston Maiden (1400m) on February 3rd, Charlevoix made a commendable transition to black type company when sixth in the Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m) at Caulfield on February 27th.

Running fourth in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) on March 18th, the New Approach colt will carry winning form into the SA Derby after taking out the Listed Galilee Series Final (2400m) on April 9th.

Drawn well in barrier 11, Charlevoix has been confirmed to be partnered by in-form hoop Mark Zahra this weekend.

Godolphin will launch a two-pronged attack on the Morphettville feature after John O’Shea confirmed both Tarquin and Etymology in the 2016 SA Derby final field.

Tarquin has been a strong and consistent performer through his entire racing career so far, and carries particularly slick form into the South Australian Derby.

A standout through an impressive two-year-old campaign last autumn, the Hard Spun gelding won a minor over 1300m on debut before taking out the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m); progressing to fifth in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) before running a close third in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m).

Returning from a brief freshen-up for success in the Mornington Guineas (1500m) on April 2nd, Tarquin has since finished third in the Vobis Gold Reef (1600m) and won the Next Payments BM90 (2000m).

Etymology is a proven performer at the class and distance and should find his ideal race in the 2016 South Australian Derby.

Capping a standout 2015 campaign second behind Tarzino in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m), Etymology took a couple of runs to find form this time, but placed a credible sixth in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) third-up.

Progressing to fifth in the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) on April 2nd, the New Approach colt placed second in the Listed VRC St Leger (2800m) last time out and will leave from barrier 12 with Ben Melham in the saddle.

Arcadia Dream (barrier 15), Sacred Eye (barrier 5) and First Impressions (barrier 9) have all been confirmed to back up from last weekend’s Australasian Oaks, while Dropped (barrier 10) figures as the field’s sole emergency.
