The in-form Redoute’s Choice colt continued his ultra-consistent three-year-old season with his maiden elite level success in the $500,000 Group 1 SA Derby (2500m) with Irish jumps jockey John Allen aboard.

After travelling just off the slow pace set by eventual 11th placed Tarquin, Howard Be Thy Name came with a brave late run and was too good for the bumper SA Derby field this Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival.

On the line he had a half-length to spare over the John O’Shea-trained Etymology ($16) who is now a dual Derby placegetter after his second to Tarzino in the VRC edition at Flemington last spring.

Finishing off the South Australian Derby trifecta in third 2.3 lengths off the gutsy winner was the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Cool Chap ($7), stablemate of Saturday’s BTC Cup winner Malaguerra at Doomben, who jumped from the outside barrier (16 of 16) in his first run since winning the Listed VRC St Leger (2800m) in Melbourne.

Howard Be Thy Name has now won five of his 11 career starts including four on the trot and three straight at Morphettville Racecourse.

Instead of heading to the paddock however, stable representative Jarrod McLean confirmed there was still more left in the tank and the horse would jump on a plane to Brisbane for a shot at the $600,000 Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke Handicap Day.
