May 12th, 2017

A talented and capacity field of three-year-old stayers is set to line up at Morphettville Racecourse on Saturday for the 2017 Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m); offering punters terrific value from a betting perspective and several key opportunities to place a winning wager.

Odeon has found terrific form this time in and remains the outright $3.30 favourite in 2017 South Australian Derby betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au, ahead of Ruthven and Netherfield; currently sharing the second line at generous $6 quotes.

Will Odeon justify favouritism and win the 2017 South Australian Derby, or will one of his rivals post an upset?

1st

Anaheim ($12)

Anaheim has shown plenty of ability throughout his racing career and is arguably offered his best chance of a maiden win at the highest level to date, when he takes his position in the 2017 South Australian Derby field. Savaging the lien for fifth in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) second-up on March 4th, the Fastnet Rock colt placed fourth in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m), but was luckless when ninth in the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m). Sure to have benefit from his most recent start after a freshen-up, Anaheim will be partnered by in-form hoop Ben Melham and is primed for a big performance.

2nd

Volatile Mix ($9.50)

Darren Weir knows what it takes to winning a stayer’s feature race in South Australia and the master trainer should go extremely close in the 2017 SA Derby with Volatile Mix. Volatile Mix has relished a step up in distance at his two most recent starts; running a credible seventh in the capacity Listed Port Adelaide Guineas (1800m) on April 8th before attacking the line for fourth in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (2030m) a fortnight ago. The Pentire gelding may need to use some energy early so as to not get lost from his wide draw, but he class is sure to count for plenty in the South Australian Derby.

3rd

Lycurgus ($34)

Lycurgus has found some terrific form between lacklustre runs this time, but the gelding is a proven performer at black type level and the distance and that could mean the difference in the South Australian Derby. Having won a Kyneton minor over 1875m on March 20th, the Star Witness gelding placed mid-pack at Cranbourne on March 31st, but responded with a smart win as a long-odds shot in the Listed Galilee Series Final (2400m) on April 8th. The gelding is drawn to receive a great run in transit from barrier 6 and will be partnered by in-form hoop Katelyn Mallyon.
